Cantoterapia (singing therapy) at Shine Music School in Gràcia, Barcelona: individual sessions that use the Werbeck method, the “School of Uncovering the Voice”, to free, expand and care for your own voice. It is open to everyone, whether or not you have ever sung. Sessions are held in Spanish or English.
What cantoterapia is
Werbeck singing is a method of singing and voice therapy developed by the Swedish singer Valborg Werbeck-Svärdström following Rudolf Steiner’s anthroposophy: a holistic conception of singing, a school for developing the voice and finding its healing through the quality of the sound and the breath as the mediator between inside and outside. It is a technique open to everyone, and one that works on the whole person.
The sessions combine that method with the differentiated breathing of Terlusology, discovered by Erich Wilk and developed by the doctors Charlotte and Christian Hagena from the two natural breathing patterns (solar: passive inhalation and active exhalation; lunar: active inhalation and passive exhalation), so that the body is used harmoniously and organically and your own voice can open.
How the sessions work
The work unfolds in three phases. First, flowing in the stream of the sound: opening the listening from the back and the periphery, inhabiting the space, separating articulation from sound, the formative and liquid consonants, Werbeck’s exercises for “forgetting the breath”, and work on the physical body. Second, amplifying and expanding the voice: the vowels and their complementary exercises, the liquid consonants as a channel for extending the voice, and work on the vital body. Third, the reflection of sound and word when singing: integrating the practice, using it in songs, creation and interpretation.
Alongside vocal technique, every session works on rhythm and melody, integrates the breath into the organic movement of the body and uses specific phonemes to open, amplify and look after the vocal instrument. It also embraces the subtler dimensions of singing: emotion, psychomotricity, the nervous system and conscious self-perception, through vocalises designed to remove the obstacles and guide you to meet your own voice.
