Singing and Cantoterapia Classes

Carolina Chacana teaches singing and Cantoterapia (singing therapy) at Shine Music School in Barcelona.

“Every human being has a singing voice. Our task is to discover it, remove the obstacles and set the voice free…” (Josefina Valborg Werbeck, founder of Werbeck Singing)

Carolina Chacana is a singer trained in Werbeck Singing, an anthroposophical singing therapist and a musicologist who studied choral conducting at the Universidad Católica de Chile. She is a Waldorf teacher (early years and primary) and a certified Iyengar Yoga instructor, and she took part in the Master’s programme in Dance Movement Therapy at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB).

She came to music through dance and went on to lyric (classical) singing for seven years, jazz and popular singing, training at Escuela Projazz and Escuela Moderna de Música. She then studied musicology and choral conducting at the Conservatory of the Universidad Católica de Chile while also studying aesthetics, with a focus on popular music. Her aesthetics studies led her to research music from oral traditions: rural folk song, lullabies (nanas and arrullos) and work songs.

She specialised in Waldorf education, teaching music through playful methods rooted in Anthroposophy and based on rhythmic games, movement verses from Speech Formation (Arte de la Palabra), Bothmer gymnastics and traditional Ibero-American folk songs. She has worked in Waldorf schools in Chile and Spain, where singing and circle games give structure to the different moments of the day.

She has lived in Catalonia since 2020. Following the same pedagogical, musical and therapeutic path, she trained there in Werbeck Singing (anthroposophical singing) with the Swiss teacher Regula Berger, and then went on to train in Cantoterapia with Regula Berger, Thomas Adam and Theodoros Rivas, leading figures in the anthroposophical school of “Uncovering the Voice”.

She has deepened her knowledge of traditional Iberian music (singing and percussion) through the Encuentros de Música de Raíz, studying with Eliseo Parra, Aleix Tobías, Rusó Salas, Ana Rossi, Acari Beltrán, Xoce Lois Romero, Isabel Martín, David Salgado and, from Portugal, Teresa Melo and Joana Negrao. She is also the founder of Hemiola Músicas, through which she manages and organises a range of activities promoting Latin American music.

Carolina’s singing classes combine vocal technique exercises from the anthroposophical school of “Uncovering the Voice” with work on rhythm and melody, integrating the breath with the organic movement of the body and using specific phonemes that help students open up, amplify and look after their own vocal instrument. Her classes also embrace the subtler dimensions of singing (emotion, psychomotor skills, the nervous system and conscious self-perception) through specific vocal exercises that aim to clear away obstacles and guide each student towards finding their own voice.
